Iudas Ergot’s life was one marked by a series of questionable choices and a constant struggle to survive in the harsh and unforgiving underbelly of the Necromunda. As a hustler, gambler, and Imperial lowlife, he had grown accustomed to a life of uncertainty, constantly on the run from debts, enemies, and the consequences of his own actions.

Growing up in impoverished circumstances of under-hive, Iudas found himself drawn to the world of gambling and hustling as a means of survival. It was a life that offered fleeting moments of excitement and the possibility of financial gain, but it also came with its fair share of risks and hardships.

Over time, Iudas became entangled in a web of deceit and shady dealings, establishing a reputation as a cunning and manipulative individual. However, his successes were often short-lived, as the consequences of his actions inevitably caught up with him, leaving him with little security or stability.

As the years passed, Iudas found himself increasingly desperate for a change of scene. The constant struggle for survival and the unending cycle of deceit and danger had taken its toll on him. He yearned for a reprieve from the relentless pursuit of his past and the opportunity to start anew.

When the chance to join the holy pilgrimage led by Cardinal Lucius Aurelius presented itself, Iudas saw it as a potential lifeline—a way to escape the clutches of his former life and seek the security he so desperately desired. The appointed office as the custodian of the alms box of the pilgrimage offered a chance to leave behind the debts, enemies, and the constant threat of violence that plagued him.

Furthermore, the pilgrimage represented a break from the familiar, a chance to step into a different world—one that, at least on the surface, promised a sense of purpose, community, and perhaps even redemption. It offered an escape from the shadows and the possibility of finding a new identity.

Iudas Ergot, known for his hustling skills and penchant for gambling, finds himself in the midst of the pilgrimage led by Cardinal Lucius Aurelius. Spotting an opportunity to embrace the situation for personal opportunity, Iudas sets his sights on the alms box, recognizing its potential as a source of wealth and Imperial influence.

Gaining the alms box

Through his connections and sharp gambling prowess, Iudas became involved in a high-stakes game with a member of the pilgrimage group. The stakes are raised when a member of Lucius’s retinue, fooishly wagers the alms box itself.

Using his guile and strategic thinking, Iudas employs cunning tactics to ensure his victory in the game. Through a combination of skillful manipulation, sleight of hand, and sheer luck, he emerges as the unlikely winner of the alms box.

However, to his initial disappointment, Iudas discovers that the alms box is empty. It does not contain any significant wealth or material possessions. Nevertheless, he realizes the true value of the alms box lies in its access to the donations collected from the faithful during the pilgrimage.

Recognizing an opportunity to exploit the situation further, Iudas skillfully assumes the role of the alms box keeper. He manages to convince the other members of the pilgrimage, including Cardinal Lucius himself, that he is the rightful custodian of the alms box and is entrusted with the responsibility of collecting and safeguarding the donations.

As Iudas assumes his newfound position, he experiences ambivalent feelings between greed and security. On one hand, his hustler’s instincts drive him to exploit the donations for personal gain. He sees the potential for accumulating wealth and securing a more comfortable future for himself.

On the other hand, the responsibility of being the alms box keeper provides Iudas with a sense of community within the pilgrimage. It grants him a certain level of protection in comrade, shielding him from suspicion and allowing him to navigate the journey with relative safety first time in his life.

Throughout the pilgrimage, Iudas’s internal conflict intensifies as he grapples with the ethical implications of his actions. He must confront the consequences of his greed and the potential harm he could cause to the faith of the pilgrims and the intentions of Cardinal Lucius.

As the journey progresses, Iudas’s character undergoes a transformation. He is faced with choices that test his values and challenge his self-serving instincts. The ambivalence between greed and community becomes a central theme in his personal development, and the resolution of this conflict will shape his path forward.

Will Iudas succumb entirely to his greed, exploiting the donations and risking the wrath of the Cardinal. Or will he discover a newfound sense of morality and redemption, learning to prioritize the greater good over his own self-interest? The outcome rests on his choices and the consequences they carry within the pilgrimage.
