Viktor Von Ulm — Childhood, Adolescence, and Coming of Age
1. Early Childhood (782–788 M41)
Viktor was born as the second son of Sophia Von Ulm-Valancia and Lord-Captain Karfa Von Ulm in a short-lived union. Karfa first saw his son during the delayed name-giving ceremony, when Viktor was two and half years old.
Karfa was already frequently absent aboard dynasty’s star vessels, and Sophia left the household when Viktor was around four years old. She joined a convent. From this early time, Viktor’s only clear happy memories are:
- His mother’s embrace – fleeting, fading moments of peace.
- Playing with a large-scale model of the Ignis Aeternus – a multi-meter-long wooden replica that floated one meter in the air via an anti-grav platform. Its weapon batteries had laser pointers, its bridge lights blinked like the real flagship, and it even had a small vox-speaker from which Viktor issued “Lord-Captain’s” commands.
- First memory of his father Victor has from his father’s and Gertrude’s wedding ceremony
2. Childhood & Early Youth (789–792 M41)
After his mother’s departure, Viktor was raised primarily by household staff, especially his nanny and his sword instructor, who became surrogate parental figures.
The family around him was unkind:
- His older brother Rudorico mocked him, accused Viktor’s mother of being a poisoner, and even destroyed Viktor’s cherished ship model with a firearm.
- His stepmother Gertrude showed no interest in him whatsoever.
- His great-grandmother Xeria once subjected him to a cruel prank involving a powerful laxative, which left him hiding in a supply closet for three humiliating days. See below.
The only time Karfa reappeared was at Viktor’s cognomen ceremony at age ten (792 M41). Soon after, his father departed again on a long trade expedition.
3. Adolescence (793–799 M41)
In his teenage years, Viktor struggled to find his place within the ever-watchful and politically charged Ulm dynasty:
- His half-sister Astral briefly welcomed him into her social games, naming him “captain of her honor guard,” only to later dismiss him with the cruel remark that he was “too young and useless.”
- Son after, while playing Astartes and Orks, Viktor charged into Kurt‘s room and beat him with an ornate power truncheon he had taken from the wall. Kurt’s knee was badly damaged and never healed properly.
- His swordmaster remained his most trusted adult presence, offering discipline and a fragile sense of confidence through rigorous training.
- Despite being surrounded by opulence, Viktor felt isolated and unvalued — abandoned in a house filled with wealth and ambition.
4. Early Adulthood (800 M41 →)

- Gertrude convinces Claudius to sign Victor to Imperial Guard artillery.
- After major fuck up he is demoted to private by commissar
- Military deserter, thought to become MIA.
- Joins Rogue Trader and travels with him.
- Hears the news of his father’s abdication of warrant before it is common news.
- Returns to Scintilla and infiltrates the dynasty’s spire and forges the mandate of heir-apparent of Rogue Trader warrant.
- Steals the official seal of the dynasty and heads to ignis Aeternus which soon departs from docks to a yearly overflight of Scintilla and the ceremonial bombardment of the moon.
The Candy Trap
In the vast and echoing hive-spire of House Von Ulm, Xeria, the ancient matriarch, ruled with quiet severity and iron calculation. She had long noticed the disappearance of her prized candied citrus peels and violet lozenges — a minor offense, perhaps, but one she would not let go unpunished.
She said nothing aloud.
Instead, she instructed her steward to dose the next bowl of sweets with a powerful alchemical laxative, then had it returned to its crystal dish in her private salon — just within reach, just where Viktor had always thought himself clever. She also activated one of her personal servo-skulls, ordering it to follow the room discreetly throughout the day.
Viktor, only nine, slipped into her quarters that afternoon as he had before. The candies were exactly where he expected — as though waiting for him. He took them with practiced care, popped one in his mouth, and fled with the rest stashed in his sleeve.
Xeria observed silently through the servo-skull’s hollow optics. No lectures. No scolding. She watched and waited.
An hour later, Viktor’s stomach began to twist and cramp. At first he tried to keep it to himself — sitting straighter, clenching his jaw, excusing himself from the dining room with feigned politeness. But the pain grew sharper, more urgent. That was when the servo-skull hovered close, and through its built-in vox, Xeria’s voice whispered:
“You’ve been poisoned. There are assassins in the house. You must hide. Do not speak to anyone. Wait until I come.”
Panic bloomed. The pain was real. The voice was real. Viktor bolted through the manor’s side corridors and concealed himself inside a dark, cramped linen closet, breath shallow, fists clenched.
For three long days, he remained there — in the stench of sweat and fecies, foodless and terrified. The servo-skull circled at a distance, maintaining its vigil. Xeria never came.
It was only when household staff noticed his stink and conducted a manual search that he was finally found — dehydrated, weak, and emotionally shattered. When they questioned him, he only said that he’d “done something wrong” and had to hide.
