While psychic power originates from the Warp-infused will of the psyker, projection is rarely effortless. Most psykers require disciplined focusing techniques to shape raw mental energy into controlled effects. This is especially true when engaging in formulaic or ritual-level projections.
Psy-Katas and Asanas
Psykers trained in structured Warpcraft disciplines use physical and vocal techniques known as psy-katas (dynamic movement forms) and psy-asanas (still or meditative poses) to:
- Anchor the mind in intent and clarity
- Direct Warp energy along stable mental conduits
- Bridge the gap between the internal will and the external projection
These forms often resemble martial arts katas, meditation rituals, or ritualized hand signs depending on the psychic tradition.
Vocalization and Gestures
- Vocalization includes chants, mantras, invocations, or barked activation phrases. It reinforces mental clarity, identity anchoring, and intent projection.
- Gestures help define the form, direction, and effect of a psychic manifestation.
These elements are not just traditions — they are functional mechanisms of focus, especially in Formulaic and Ritual projections.
Silent Projection Penalties
In Warpcraft, projecting without vocalization and gesture disrupts the psyker’s ability to focus and channel Warp energy safely. While some subtle use is possible under extreme discipline, most projection benefits significantly from outward expression.
- Formulaic Projection
Performing a formulaic power without gestures or vocalization incurs a –5 to –10 penalty to the Power Projection Test, depending on environmental stress or psychic interference. The GM determines the exact value based on narrative conditions. - Ritual Projection
Cannot be performed silently under any circumstances. The intricate flow of Warp energy required in ritual workings demands full vocal and physical commitment to stabilize the projection and avoid catastrophic feedback. - Spontaneous Projection
May be performed silently, but doing so:- Applies a –5 penalty to the Power Projection Test
- Increases the chance of Perils of the Warp (roll an extra d10 if Perils are triggered, take the worst result)
- Pushing the Limit Clause
If the psyker is Pushing the Limit to temporarily raise their Psy Rating beyond its normal maximum, projection cannot be done silently — the strain on body and soul demands full external focus. Attempting to suppress voice or gesture in this state results in automatic Perils of the Warp and disruption of the projection.
