The Lost Millenia

The Lost Millennia refers to a theorized thousand-year gap in Imperial history, a period seemingly excised from all records and collective memory. The only evidence for its existence comes from discrepancies in calendrical systems across Imperial sectors and subsectors, as well as cryptic, fragmented references in ancient texts that hint at events or timelines that do not align with current historical accounts. This gap is believed to have occurred during or shortly after the Age of Apostasy, a chaotic period rife with corruption, civil wars, and systemic purges of knowledge.

Evidence for the Lost Millennia

  1. Discrepant Calendars:
    • Astropathic records and ancient star charts from different sectors frequently exhibit a thousand-year discrepancy when cross-referenced.
    • Attempts by Imperial scholars to reconcile these inconsistencies often lead to the conclusion that a full millennium has been “skipped” or erased, with no official explanation provided.
    • Notably, the Segmentum Pacificus and Segmentum Solar calendars diverge when compared to those of the Segmentum Obscurus, with the missing period consistently falling around the latter part of the Age of Apostasy (M35).
  2. Fragmented Historical Texts:
    • Incomplete or redacted records mention wars, movements, and planetary events with dates that either do not match existing timelines or refer to periods for which no other records exist.
    • Certain religious texts of the Ecclesiarchy contain cryptic allusions to “the millennia of fire and silence,” suggesting a time of great upheaval and loss.
    • Data-vaults on Mars have been found with encryption keys referencing this era, but their contents are classified under Inquisitorial Secrecy Protocol Sigma-Black.
  3. Geopolitical Oddities:
    • Entire sub-sectors, such as the Nythra Spiral in the Segmentum Tempestus, appear to have been recolonized as if they were abandoned for centuries, but no records explain their depopulation or the subsequent reclamation efforts.
    • Worlds bearing architecture or ruins inconsistent with the known timeline of Imperial expansion suggest they were active during the missing period and later purged or forgotten.
  4. Warp-Storm Dissipation:
    • Star charts show warp storms dissipating “too quickly” in several regions, with the affected systems being fully integrated into the Imperium shortly after. However, no accounts detail what occurred during their apparent isolation, suggesting events in the Lost Millennia.

Theories Behind the Lost Millennia

  1. Massive Ecclesiarchical Purge:
The most widely accepted theory is that the Ecclesiarchy and its allies in the Inquisition purged an entire millennium of history during the aftermath of the Age of Apostasy.
    • This could have been done to erase records of widespread heresies, political dissent, or failures by the Ecclesiarchy itself.
    • The “Reign of Blood” under Goge Vandire may have extended well beyond its officially recorded duration, with post-Apostasy leaders erasing these years to consolidate their legitimacy.
  2. Unrecorded Civil Wars:
Some suggest the Lost Millennia was marked by catastrophic internal conflict, including wars between Imperial factions such as rogue Space Marine Chapters, breakaway Forge Worlds, or rebellious sectors.
    • The destruction was so vast that it necessitated the suppression of all records to restore faith in the Imperium.
  3. Warp and Xenos Incursions:
    • There are whispers of massive Warp incursions or xenos invasions that devastated Imperial worlds during this period. These events might have been expunged to prevent panic or demoralization.
    • Some believe the Necrons or Tyranids were active in the galaxy far earlier than recorded, and the Lost Millennia represents a time when the Imperium narrowly survived such threats.
  4. An Experiment Gone Awry:
    • A more esoteric theory posits that the Lost Millennia involved failed Imperial experiments with psychic phenomena, or artificial intelligence, the consequences of which were so dire that all knowledge of them had to be obliterated.
  5. Deliberate Warp Manipulation:
    • Others propose that the forces of Chaos, particularly Tzeentch, deliberately erased, changed or obscured records to create an illusion of this period to sow confusion and weaken the Imperium’s grasp on its own history.

Effects of the Erasure

Cultural Anomalies:
Certain traditions and rituals of the Ecclesiarchy and Mechanicus seem to originate in the Lost Millennia, but their original purposes have been lost or deliberately obscured.

Mystery and Speculation:
The mystery surrounding the Lost Millennia has become a source of obsession for rogue scholars, heretical cults, and even some members of the Inquisition. These individuals risk execution to uncover fragments of the truth, believing that the key to the Imperium’s survival may lie in what was forgotten.

    Imperial Denial

The Administratum, Adeptus Mechanicus, and Ecclesiarchy vehemently deny the existence of a Lost Millennia. Any inquiries into the period are labeled as heretical, and investigators often disappear or are silenced. However, these efforts only lend credence to the idea that something significant—and potentially damning—has been erased.

The Officio Historica is an Imperial organization within the Adeptus Administratum, responsible for overseeing historical records. It is based on Terra, near the Library Sanctus, and its members undergo frequent memory modifications to protect classified knowledge. Its importance led to the creation of the Ordo Scriptus, an Inquisitorial branch overseeing its operations. In M42, much of its resources were reallocated to Logos Historica Veritas, a move opposed by the Inquisition. It has multiple sub-divisions, some overlapping with the Adeptus Astartes Historium.
