“I toiled beside the engine. I patched what was broke. I was never noticed—but without my duty, the whole machine fails.”
Across the Imperium, uncountable trillions toil in silence. Among them are the Menials—unseen laborers who maintain the infrastructure of hive cities, forge temples, voidships, manufactoria, and shrine worlds. Neither slave nor free citizen, they occupy the forgotten space between cog and gear, living lives of mechanical repetition and subsistence survival.
Menials are born into duty, trained only for the function they must perform, and sometimes half-tethered into the machines they serve. Most die unrecorded, ground underfoot by servitors, overseers, or punishing workload. But a rare few break from the pattern—whether by accident, awakening, or Inquisitorial selection.
These survivors bring with them a blend of practical knowledge, stoic endurance, and an uncanny sense for underbelly of the Imperium. Their strength lies not in ideology or nobility, but in grim utility.
