Astropathic messages are the Imperium’s only reliable means of communication across interstellar distances. Sent by Soul-Bound psykers who channel the raw power of the Warp, these messages traverse light-years in moments—but at great psychic risk and with no guarantee of clarity or delivery. Only trained Astropaths may perform this sacred task, projecting encrypted thoughts through the immaterium using their telepathic connection to the amplification device known as Astropathic Choir and Astropathic Relay.
Key Lore Points
- Astropaths can transmit messages across interstellar distances via the Warp.
- Messages are sent and received telepathically through the Astropathic Choir or the Astropathic Relays, guided by the psyker’s mind and soul.
- Only Soul-Bound psykers (like Astropaths) can perform this kind of communication safely.
Astropathic Communication Technology in the Imperium
The Imperium relies on two primary technologies to facilitate astropathic messaging: the Astropathic Relay Station and the Astropathic Choir . These devices and installations serve as psychic transmission hubs, enabling the long-distance communication vital to Imperial governance, warfare, and Inquisitorial operations.
Astropathic Relay Station
A large-scale facility permanently staffed by multiple Soul-Bound Astropaths.
Designed to:
- Amplify signal strength significantly
- Transmit messages across and between sectors
- Handle high message volume with broad psychic bandwidth
- Can more easily disentangle overlapping or interfering messages.
- Requires a stable power supply and substantial infrastructure.
- Found on major Imperial worlds, Adeptus Administratum centers, and certain Segmentum Command ships.
Astropathic Choir In to the Storm page 161, edited for Ultima Tectum campaign
A compact transmission device which can be operated even by a single Astropath. Used where large choir installations are impractical, such as: Imperial Navy flagships Inquisitorial Black Ships, Rogue Trader vessels or high value stations
- Can receive messages from any source, but can only transmit within a single Imperial sector.
- Has lower psychic bandwidth, making it vulnerable to traffic congestion and message interference.
Rules / Mechanics
1. Psychic Test to Transmit
- Treat sending a message as a Telepathy-based power.
- Require a Focus Power Test (based on Willpower + Psy Rating).
- The difficulty should scale with:
- Distance (same system = easy, sector = standard, across segmentum = hard)
- Interference (Warp storms, daemon activity, etc.)
- Message clarity (sending simple feelings vs. detailed data)
Success: Message gets through, albeit possibly distorted.
Failure: Message is delayed, distorted, or lost in the Warp.
Perils of the Warp: A failed power test might trigger phenomena as usual.
2. Time & Delay
- Even if successful, messages take time:
- Within a system: hours to a day
- Within a sector: 1–2 days
- Across sectors: days to weeks, depending on narrative needs
- GM fiat applies; the Warp is unpredictable.
3. Security & Interpretation
- Messages are often:
- Encoded or symbolic (mental imagery, emotions, cryptic concepts)
- Misinterpreted by the receiving Astropath (GM’s discretion)
- Both the sender and the receiver have to succeed at tests to ensure clarity.
Example (GM-Ruled Transmission)
An Astropath Transcendent attempts to send a warning to a distant Inquisitorial outpost 2 sectors away.
The GM sets a Hard (-20) Focus Power Test using Willpower + Psy Rating.
On a success, the message is sent, but it will take 5–7 days to reach its destination.
On a failure, the message is twisted, possibly misinterpreted, and the psyker rolls on the Psychic Phenomena table.
